The Rumour wins SABA!


We are thrilled and delighted to announce that the Karadi Tales picture book The Rumour has won the South Asia Book Award, administered by the South Asia National Outreach Consortium. 


The award is given annually for outstanding works of literature, from early childhood to secondary reading levels, which accurately and skillfully portrays South Asia or South Asians in the diasporas, that is the experience of individuals living in South Asia, or of South Asians living in other parts of the world. 


The book is available in North America through Tundra Books.

The Frankfurt Book Fair Fellowship - 29 Sept - 13 October 2013
We promote young international publishers  
Due to last year’s success the German Book Office New Delhi will again award the fellowship, for the South Asian region in 2013.
In the run-up to the Frankfurt Book Fair, this prestigious Frankfurt Fellowship Programme focuses on information exchange, professional dialogue and the creation of networks between young international publishers.
First launched to mark the 50th anniversary of the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1998, the Frankfurt Book Fair Fellowship Programme provides information and networking within the international publishing world. During the last years, more than 240 participants from 44 countries have gained from this programme.
THE PROGRAMME
The Programme gives deep insight into the German book world and brings the Fellows to important centres of German publishing. Publishing professionals provide an overview of the German book market and pass their international career experiences on to the Fellows. The Fellowship group (approximately 15 persons) includes people from all parts of the world, and in the 2 weeks spent together, the fellows learn about each participants markets and gain from each other’s experiences.

Travel expenses and accommodation while staying in Germany and part of the entertainment costs are covered by the Frankfurt Book Fair. Travel expenses to
Germany and back home are excluded.
Annual reunions of former Frankfurt Fellows at the Frankfurt Book Fair keep the Frankfurt Fellows Network alive.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
In order to apply for Frankfurt Book Fair Fellowship, you should meet the following conditions:
Condition 1 – you must be a citizen of Bangladesh,India,Nepal,PakistanorSri Lanka
Condition 2 – you must have several years' experience in publishing
Condition 3 – you must submit a recommendation from current employer
Condition 4 – you must submit three letters of recommendation of international business partners
Condition 5 – you must have good knowledge of English
Condition 6 – you must submit a research paper on the Book Publishing Industry * (refer appendix I)
Condition 7 – you must send along with the detailed documents mentioned above a completed registration form
Deadline for accepting the completed application with all documents as detailed, is 30th April 2013. Incomplete and late applications will not be accepted.

Frankfurt Book Fair Fellowship
THE RESEARCH
To apply for the fellowship you will have to submit a cohesive and comprehensive report on any one of the following sectors in Publishing:
  • Book Retail and Distribution
  • Children’s Book Publishing
  • Digital Publishing
Your research should include:
For Book retail and distribution
  • An overview of the sector in South Asia (India,Nepal,Bangladesh,Pakistan,Sri Lanka) with numbers: size of the market, turnover
  • What are the various strategies? Digital/ Print etc. and statistics on the various sections
  • The distribution and retail routes, publicity, promotions, book fairs etc.
  • New business models being explored and implemented
  • The gaps/ existing challenges and a projection of the future potential and avenues for expansion
  • Major players, top 10 companies with details of Managing Directors, CEOs etc.
  • Agents/ what parts of the process are being outsourced?
  • Potential for international players
  • Please add market surveys and databases
For Children’s book publishing
  • An overview of the sector in South Asia (India,Nepal,Bangladesh,Pakistan,Sri Lanka) with numbers: size of the  market, turnover, printruns, printruns of first editions, no of publishers, no of titles, regional languages
  • How much is original content and how much is printed from rights bought from other regions and  which regions (languages)
  • How much is digitised and what are the distribution channels
  • The marketing models – distribution route, publicity, promotions, book fairs etc.
  • The gaps/ existing challenges and a projection of the future potential and avenues for expansion
  • New business models being explored and implemented
  • A brief on the rights/editorial process
  • Agents/ what parts of the process are being outsourced?
  • Potential for international trade
  • Major players, top 10 companies with details of Managing Directors, CEOs etc.
  • Please add market surveys and databases
For Digital Publishing
  • An overview of the sector in South Asia (India,Nepal,Bangladesh,Pakistan,Sri Lanka) with numbers: size of the market, turnover regional languages
  • Domestic Vs International clients
  • What are the different services offered with statistics
  • What are the various products available with statistics
  • The marketing models –distribution route, publicity, promotions, fairs etc.
  • The gaps/ existing challenges and a projection of the future potential and avenues for expansion
  • New business models being explored and implemented
  • Major players, top 10 companies with details of Managing Directors, CEOs etc.
  • Potential for international trade

Write&Read Chennai

In 2011, we helped conduct Write&Read Chennai, a story writing program launched by Hewlett Packard India to spark the creative process in young children. In association with Katha, an NGO that focuses on bringing quality reading and education to children living in poverty, we conducted a 2-day story writing workshop for students of Chennai. Looking for Editorial Interns!

We're looking for editorial interns at Karadi Tales. It's a great opportunity for English majors who are curious about publishing. This position is based in Chennai and cannot be fulfilled remotely. We're completely open to applications from all academic streams, of course, but a passion for reading, strong copy-editing skills, and general computer savvy are a must. Take a look at our books and our website before applying.

Internships at Karadi Tales are generally offered throughout the year on a rolling basis for 2 months at a time, based on the availability of candidates. It is also possible to take up the internship as a part-time (only part of the working day), according to candidates' preference. We offer a small stipend to candidates, but cannot assist with relocation to Chennai, accommodation, or commute.

Bologna Children's Book Fair 2013

We were privileged to be special delegates of the Italian Trade Commission at the 50th Bologna Children's Book Fair 2013 in March. There was celebration all over Bologna as the book fair celebrated its golden jubilee in grand style. Here are some pictures from the book fair.
